A Visit from Author and Futurist, Brenda Cooper and her new book Reading the Wind!

Brenda Cooper

On Saturday, October 11th, look to the future with ABFAS as we welcome Brenda Cooper from 1:00 - 3:00pm with Reading the Wind, the latest in the "Silver Ship Saga".

As a futurist, Brenda Cooper is interested in how new technologies might change us and our world, particularly for the better. As an author, Brenda Cooper's latest science fiction novel takes you on a journey to a world of genetically altered beings and technically advanced societies - images manifested from the author's inquiring mind.

Reading the Wind

Reading the Wind: The colony planet of Fremont was supposed to be free of all genetically altered beings—a new home for a pure race. So when Chelo and her brother Joseph, along with two other genetically altered teenagers, were abandoned on Fremont, they were not welcome. They vowed to get off the planet by any means necessary. Joseph and the others managed to escape, but Chelo was left behind with her new found love, forced to live underground.

Joseph and the others find that their homeworld is full of vengeance. Believing that the people of Fremont killed the teenaged castaways, they sent a technologically advanced mercenary team to Fremont to eliminate the entire planet's population. With the help of Joseph's father, the youngsters head back to Fremont to try to save Chelo.

"Brenda Cooper tells a tale of a powerful brother and sister in a fight for their lives, offering insights along the way into the nature of courage and the hunger for community that burns in every human being. This is a lively book, full of colorful images and a memorable cast of human and animal characters, a worthy successor to The Silver Ship and the Sea."—Louise Marley

Reading the Wind follows The Silver Ship and the Sea. Brenda Cooper's first book, Building Harlequin's Moon, was written in conjunction with science fiction author Larry Niven.

A Cedar Cove Christmas

Think ahead to the perfect holiday gift!—A Cedar Cove Christmas—Mother-to-be Mary Jo Wise arrives in Cedar Cove on Christmas Eve, searching for her baby's father. David Rhodes had said he'd be in town. But he isn't. Which leaves Mary Jo stranded, pregnant and alone. And there's no room at the local inn...

So Grace Harding brings Mary Jo home to her nearby ranch. She and her husband, Cliff, have a houseful of guests but offer her a room over their stable (currently sheltering the animals-including a donkey and camel—for Cedar Cove's Nativity pageant!)

When Mary Jo goes into labor that night, a young man named Mack McAfee, a paramedic, comes to her rescue, just as her brothers—the three Wyse men—show up in town. The people of Cedar Cove join them in celebrating the birth of baby Noel. But no one has more to celebrate than Mack. Because this Christmas brings him faith, hope and love.

An Evening at The Barn Beach Reserve with Paul Roberts and The End of Food

Paul Roberts

Thursday, November 6th from 7-9pm, come to the Barn at the Barn Beach Reserve where Leavenworth's nationally-acclaimed research journalist and author, Paul Roberts, will present a program about topics related to his new book, The End of Food.

In this fascinating narrative, the best-selling author of The End of Oil turns his attention to the modern food economy and finds that the system entrusted to meet our most basic needs is failing dramatically.

The End of Food

Carefully researched and vividly recounted, Roberts lays out the stark economic realities beneath modern food, and shows how our system for making, marketing, and moving what we eat is growing less and less compatible with the billions of consumers that system was built to serve. Comprehensive and global, with lucid writing, dramatic detail and fresh insights, The End of Food offers readers new, accessible way to understand the vulnerable miracle of the modern food economy. Roberts presents clear, stark visions of the future and helps us prepare to make the decisions—personal and global—we must make to survive the demise of food production as we know it.

In addition to discussing how food systems are breaking down, Roberts suggests ways in which they can be put on a course to sustainability.

Paul Roberts has written about the resource economics and politics for numerous publications, including The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, and Rolling Stone, and lectures frequently on business and environmental issues. The End of Oil was a 2005 New York Public Library Helen Bernstein Book Award Finalist.

At the conclusion of his presentation, Roberts will welcome questions from the audience. Suggested donation of $3 for Barn Beach Reserve members, $5 for non-members.

Robert Wells returns with his new book, "Polar Bear, Why is Your World Melting?"

Robert Wells

On November 8th from 1-3pm, Children's Book author and illustrator Robert Wells brings his new book to ABFAS!

Greenhouse gas, global warming... We hear these words in our news and conversations daily, which means our children are growing up with these words in a way in which our generation never dreamed possible. Enter Robert Wells. By using an easygoing style, simple language and colorful drawings in Polar Bear, Why is Your World Melting?, children can read and begin to understand these concepts! Why is so much carbon dioxide going into the air and what can be done to help keep the Earth cool?

In the Arctic, the summer ice is melting, making it hard for polar bears and their cubs to survive. Why is the world getting warmer?

Polar Bear, Why is Your World Melting?

The heat of the sun is trapped by the greenhouse gases that surround Earth, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and water vapor. If there is just the right amount of these trapped gases, the air is warm enough for plants, animals, and people to thrive. But now there is too much greenhouse gas, especially carbon dioxide. Polar bears, and all of us, are in trouble.

Reading level: Ages 4-8

Robert Wells is also the author of such popular books as "Can You Count to a Googol?", "What's Smaller Than a Pygmy Shrew?", "How Do You Lift a Lion?", "What's Faster than A Speeding Cheetah?" and "Is a Blue Whale the Biggest Thing There Is?" among other similar concept books for children, all available at ABFAS!

Kevin Emerson

Also for Teachers' Appreciation Night on November 8th, Kevin Emerson!

Author Kevin Emerson joined us back in July with the release of the first two books in the Oliver Nocturne Series about a vampire boy living in Seattle. We're excited to have Kevin back for Teachers' Appreciation night from 7:00-9:00pm and he's not only bringing one new book, he's bringing two!

First, is a new book named Carlos Is Gonna Get It and it's just received a Booklist Starred Review! Kevin drew on his own experience as a former inner-city schoolteacher in this extraordinary novel about bullies, pranks, rocky friendships, and what it means to "get" it.

The second book is the third installment of the Oliver Nocturne Series, Blood Ties, that will be released just in time for Kevin's arrival. A vacation away, an old world vampire family, an asylum colony... Kevin's packed in plenty in this exciting new chapter!

Carlos Is Gonna Get It

Carlos Is Gonna Get It

How strange is Carlos? REALLY strange. He scratches himself all the time, and he talks about aliens in this weird shaky voice, and he breaks up the class and gets everyone else in trouble when it's *his* fault he's such a freak.

So Trina, Donte, Thea, Sara, and Frankie decide to use the upcoming 7th-grade class trip to "get" Carlos and scare him into acting normal. But when Trina has to work with Carlos on a class project, she discovers both his sweetness and the full extent of his troubles. Will she pull out of the plan or go through with it? And what will happen if—when—Carlos gets it?

Oliver Nocturne - Blood Ties

Oliver Nocturne Series III—Blood Ties—To avoid the summer sun, the Nocturnes head for vacation at Isla Necrata, a resort whose location always changes, putting it near a geologic calamity—most often a volcanic eruption. As a bonus, Oliver is allowed to bring Dean along, the only catch being that he has to pretend to be Oliver's servant. Before they get there, the Nocturnes must endure a particularly uncomfortable visit with Oliver's extended, Old World vampire family, who live in Morosia, a vampire city underneath Rome.

Lewis Buzbee

Topping off our Teachers' Appreciation Night extravaganza is author and bibliophile extraordinaire, Lewis Buzbee!

Lewis Buzbee is a former bookseller, a former sales rep, and former publisher. He is also a teacher in the University of San Francisco M.F.A. Program for Writers, but what Lewis Buzbee is above of all is a life-long lover of books. On Teachers' Appreciation Night, we are pleased to have Lewis Buzbee at ABFAS along with two of his recent books. One just for you and one that your kids will love! The Yellow-Lighted Bookshop, takes his love of books and bookstores and mixes it with an abundance of history and insight. The newly released middle reader Steinbeck's Ghost is a book that introduces young readers to the characters of John Steinbeck novels as the young man in the story sees them strangely coming to life around him.
Lewis's writing reflects his love of books. Come on out and meet Lewis and pick up a signed copy of one of his latest. Let Lewis share his love of books with you and your kids!

Lewis will also join us on November 9th from 11:00am-1:00pm to sign books, talk books, and spend a bit more time with us here at ABFAS!

The Yellow-lighted Bookshop

The Yellow Lighted Bookshop - A celebration of the unique experience of the bookstore - the smell and touch of books, getting lost in the deep canyons of shelves, and the silent community of readers. Woven throughout is a fascinating historical account of the bookseller trade - from the great Alexandria library with an estimated one million papyrus scrolls to Sylvia Beach's famous Paris bookstore, Shakespeare & Co., that led to the extraordinary effort to publish and sell James Joyce's Ulysses. Rich with anecdotes, The Yellow-Lighted Bookshop is the perfect choice for those who relish the enduring pleasures of spending an afternoon finding just the right book.

"You realize Buzbee just doesn't love books, he's besotted." — Publishers Weekly, Starred Review

"A delectable feast... I cannot remember when I have read a book with such delight." — Paul Yamazaki, City Lights Bookstore

"Both anecdotal and eloquent...a tribute to those who crave the cozy confines of a bookshop, a place to be 'alone among others' and savor a bountiful literary buffet." — Booklist, Starred Review

"A leisurely stroll with a knowledgeable but unpretentious companion through some very interesting aisles." — Kirkus Reviews

Steinbeck's Ghost

Steinbeck's Ghost - It's been two months since Travis's family moved to a development so new that it seems totally unreal. His parents are working harder now, to pay for it all, and Travis is left to fend for himself.

There's one place, though, where Travis can still connect with his old life: the Salinas library. Travis and his family used to go there together every Saturday, but now he bikes to it alone, re-reading his favorite books.

It's only natural that Travis likes the work of author John Steinbeck-after all, Salinas is Steinbeck's hometown. But that can't explain why Travis is suddenly seeing Steinbeck's characters spring to life. There's the homeless man in the alley behind the library, the line of figures at the top of a nearby ridge, the boy who writes by night in an attic bedroom. Travis has met them all before-as a reader. But why are they here now? And how?

"...the story remains an intriguing introduction/companion to Steinbeck's works and imaginatively conveys the power of literature to transport people to another time and place." — Publishers Weekly

"...Buzbee's love for literature and libraries is infectious and, for those similarly inclined, deeply satisfying." — Booklist

"Magical realism with Steinbeck's ghost and a discerning young hero." — Kirkus Reviews
